༢༽ After the Chinese occupation of Tibet, Cariappa was keen to strengthen the country's defenses right up to the border with Tibet. With this in mind, he told Nehru that Indians should prepare itself military against China's expansionist designs, Nehru flared up. He told Cariappa it was not the business of Commander-in- chief to tell the prime minister who was going to attack where. But Patel could not be brushed aside as easily. He wrote a letter to Nehru explaining that the Chinese occupation of Tibet has increased the threat to India as there was no agreed border between the two. Nehru maintained that Pakistan was the military threat, while China and India could resolve their differences with goodwill and diplomatic means. So after Patel passed away, Nehru and his men pretended that there was no problem with China. China wanted Tibet's vast area to accommodate fast-growing Chinese population; the large untapped mineral reserves could be exploited; and the domination of Asia. If this had been understood, Nehru would have followed Patel's and Cariappa's advice to both strengthen border management and resolve the border disputes, which was possible in his lifetime. The 1962 war and the clandestine nexus between China and Pakistan may not have developed.
